Custom Wooden Practice Jians
Jians are custom built to their owner’s personal dimensions. The sword is sized from the floor to the height of the owner’s navel; this maximizes length without over-reaching. The handle is 1.5 hand widths. They are precision balanced so that the balance point is one hand width from where the handle meets the hilt, making for a very lively, controllable sword. Tapered, with an even curve to the edge; each Jian takes lessons and refinements from its predecessors. These are all custom, made-to-order Jians.
The process of building a custom jian has many steps:
1. the practitioner’s dimensions must be taken.

2. any special customizations should be accounted for in the design

3. The proper wood must be chosen and sized

4. Jian must be meticulously marked up for proper carving.

5. Time for a rough shaping, hilt gets fitted, hilt lock ring gets created.

6. Jian gets shaped and incrementally hand sanded to perfection.

7. At this point, the Jian can be precision balanced by incrementally adding weight to the pommel until the sword has the perfect balance point, one hand width from where the handle and hilt meet.

8. A weight (matching the balancing weight) is cut from steel bar and inserted into the center of the pommel end.

9. A shaping of the pommel and final sanding of the jian can take place.

10. After a test for fit and feel, the parts can be stained.

11. The Jian is masked and meticulously glued using different formulation glues as vibration damping and reinforcement.

12. When the glue has set, the masking gets removed, and final cleanup and prep is done before finishing.

13. Jians are finished in Danish Oil and Beeswax.

The whole process takes close to 30 hours in the shop, and several days of waiting for glues and finishes to dry.
